For the yogi always on the go, a foldable travel mat is a game-changer. It easily fits into a suitcase or backpack, making it perfect for yoga on the road. Hello- long layover airport yoga practices! Ya… we do that. Our favourite BY FAR is the Manduka eco-lite travel mat. Sticky, grippy, foldable. It’s $52 and WELL WORTH it.
If you’re Canadian and you prefer to shop a Canadian brand, BMat also makes a travel mat that is a good alternative. It’s basically just the rubber over-layer of their regular mat.

A beach environment is perfect for yoga, as you get a chance to commune with nature and enjoy its scenery. The calming energy of being near the ocean also creates optimal conditions for you to do some much-needed self-care and check in with yourself.
As a mindfulness practice, yoga is one of the most popular due to its many health benefits. It can improve your mental and physical well-being and help you better connect with the world around you. The effects of the latter can be further enhanced when yoga is done somewhere idyllic and calming, like on a beach.
A beach environment is perfect for yoga, as you get a chance to commune with nature and enjoy its scenery. The calming energy of being near the ocean also creates optimal conditions for you to do some much-needed self-care and check in with yourself. It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance your practice. If you want to make the most of doing yoga on the beach, here are five tips to achieve a rewarding session.
GO BEFORE NOON
Exercising outdoors is said to be beneficial for health because sunshine has been proven to boost mood. It triggers the production of serotonin, which is the hormone that makes you feel happy. However, staying under the sun for too long can be dangerous and lead to sunburn. As such, it’s best to find a time window when it’s safe to do yoga at the beach. Health experts suggest going between 8 am and 10 am for a healthy dose of sunlight. It won’t be that hot, and sun rays won’t be as intense and direct as they normally are around noon onwards.
USE SUN PROTECTION
As great as the sun is at providing Vitamin D, it can also cause damage to the body when preventative measures aren’t taken. Products like high-SPF sunscreen can lessen the chances of developing conditions like skin cancer as long as it’s used correctly. This means applying an even layer across all exposed skin at least 30 minutes prior to heading out, with reapplications every two hours. Similarly, sun damage can occur in the eyes when not properly protected. You can get beach sunglasses with advanced polarized lens technology to ensure the safety of your eyes. These specialized glasses will reduce the glare that you see reflected on the water from the sun. You can even opt for a custom fit so that your glasses stay on comfortably during a yoga session.
TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SAND
One of the most unique things about doing yoga at the beach is that you don’t have to prepare extra equipment to start. You can simply choose a spot and do yoga straight from the sand. In fact, bringing a yoga mat is even discouraged as the sand is just likely to stick to it and damage it. In some ways, the sand can actually support you better with yoga. It’s much softer and more forgiving should you lose your balance. This way, you can use your time at the beach to try new poses without worrying about getting hurt against a hard surface. That said, you should still exercise awareness so that you don’t push yourself too much.
BE IN SYNC WITH THE WAVES
Studies have proven that being at the beach naturally gives most people a calming and restorative effect. You can use this to your advantage when you do yoga by using the waves to keep count. The rhythmic sound of the ocean can be used to regulate your breathing, keep you focused, and eliminate any distractions around to keep your attention on the task at hand. It can also make you feel relaxed quickly, allowing you to be in a proper headspace ready for yoga.

Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga merges the principles of the chakra system with the dynamic and flowing movements of vinyasa yoga. The chakra system consists of seven major energy centers in the body, each linked to different physical, emotional, and spiritual aspects of our lives.
In Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga, we match specific vinyasa sequences with the energy and themes of each chakra. Each practices focuses on a particular chakra, using yoga poses and flows that stimulate and balance that energy center. For example, grounding poses like Mountain Pose and Warrior Poses are used for the Root Chakra to help you feel stable and safe.
In addition to the thematic poses and sequences, Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga incorporates breathing exercises and meditation techniques aligned with the chakra being focused on. Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga offers a holistic and transformative practice. Through the integration of movement, breath, and intention, Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga supports balance, awareness, and harmony both on and off the mat. By aligning and activating your body’s energy centers, Chakra-Vinyasa Yoga offers wonderful healing tools to help you connect more deeply with yourself and the world around you.

Meditation is like giving your brain a break, a cleanse or a rest. Meditation effects our bodies in the exact opposite way that stress does. It helps our minds and bodies heal and repair as well as shields us from the damage of new stressors. With sustained practice, meditation can usher the practitioner into expanded realms of consciousness. There are no potential negative side effects. No equipment is needed.
How do I meditate? That’s a tough question. Let’s start by talking about what meditation actually is:
Meditation is a mindfulness practice that has been around for millennia. Mindfulness means becoming more fully aware of the present moment without attachment or expectation.
Meditation is the spirit of being “in the now”. There is no religious or spiritual component to mindfulness or meditation. ANYONE with any belief system or from any religious background can enjoy the benefits of meditation.
Like any skill, Meditation takes time and sustained practice to master.
The benefits of meditation have been scientifically proven. It’s effects are far reaching and cumulative over time. The longer you maintain a committed meditation practice, the more benefits you will realize.
IMMEDIATE BENEFITS OF MEDITATION:
LONGTERM BENEFITS OF DAILY MEDITATION:
There are many different types of meditation. Different styles will resonate with different people. All meditation involves being fully present and quieting the mind away from other distractions. Another important part of meditation is posture. It is crucial to be upright (laying down is okay too in some instances) with the spine erect. This allows for the energy to flow freely up and down our central energetic axis from root to crown and back again.
FINDING A COMFORTABLE SEAT: If a practitioner is going to engage in a seated meditation, the most important aspect is to be comfortable in that seated position. To align oneself properly in meditation, insure that: 1. The 2 sitting bones are rooted firmly into the ground (or chair) 2. The knees are below the hips (sometimes props are needed to aid with this) 3. The spine is upright and stacked (ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips)
STEADY BREATH: Finding a calm and steady stream of breath is another important part of meditation. Start by slowing down and deepening the breath. Then let the inhales and exhales become the same length. Once that happens, allow yourself to breathe normally without effort or thought.
RELEASING THE MIND: Of course distraction happens. This is normal! Meditation does not mean thoughts do not happen. It also doesn’t mean we do not notice sounds or bugs or things around us. Meditation is a practice of non-attachment and letting go. If thoughts come up, which they will, notice them, move them out of your awareness and then return to your meditation gently, gracefully, without judgement. If you find yourself distracted by something around you, notice it and gently return back to your meditation.
Remember: Just like physical postures, meditation takes practice. Just like Asana, meditation is often challenging the first few times. It reveals sides of ourselves that may be dark or scary. Just like in asana practice, we may notice areas of the body where we are tight, strained or week, in meditation we start to notice thought patterns or belief systems that we want to soften.
Every single morning when you wake up, you have the opportunity for a fresh start. Each and every morning you can decide if you will make a change or not. Each and every day you get to side who you are going to wake up and be that day.
Below we’ve created a simple. actionable and easy to manage morning routine checklist. Try it for a week and see if you like it! Click the image to download this as a PDF or simply keep it on your phone or tablet and check it off! Be sure to let us know how it goes!
In addition to having a mindfulness checklist, we also recommend the following:
This helps your body establish a rhythm, making it easier to get up in the morning.
We eat the same thing every morning, fruit, with protein (eggs or nut butters) and a carb. Except Tuesdays when we have pancakes! Having a couple of simple options for breakfast that you know, love and depend on takes out the struggle of having to make mundane decisions first thing in the morning.
Actually, we feel it best to do this the night before so you do not wake up in the morning stressed about what you “think” you need to accomplish that day or try to remember all the errands you need to run that morning. Creating a to do list for the next morning the night before also allows you to sleep better, knowing that your next day is set out. Prioritize the list in a higherarchy to help you organize your day!
Download the checklist and see how you do for a week! Do you want to incorporate it in to your month? Year? How do you feel when you have a guideline for your day? Let us know!

Ashtanga yoga is primarily a self-practice. That’s what is cool about it! You just try and keep trying and see how you progress. When you can, you seek out a qualified teacher. So here’s our favourite Ashtangi, Tina Bock, offering you an express primary series for beginners. This is a perfect place to start your Ashtanga Yoga practice!
What is Ashtanga Yoga? It’s a pretty disciplined and classical approach to yoga. It came to us through Pattabhi Jois via his teacher, Krishnamacharya. Ashtanga Yoga is progressive and linear. You start where you are. You start where you can and you practice and repeat 6-days per week and track your own progression.

If this is too much to start, feel free instead to begin JUST with sun salutations. Maybe you’ll do 1 round of sun salutations, maybe 2 or 3. You just do what you can and then come back again the next day and try again. Ashtanga Yoga may seem intimidating for beginners but it is actually a very accessible yoga practice since it’s progressive and linear. Ashtanga Yoga really takes a “do what you can” kind of attitude to your yoga practice.
By far our most requested (and one of the world’s most sought after yoga teacher training course. This 200hr Yoga-Alliance Registered Teacher Training is the perfect foundation for becoming a professional yoga teacher.
So you’ve got a friend, daughter, wife, uncle or step parent who’s REALLY into yoga eh? Or maybe you’re trying to find the perfect gift for the yoga teacher you love! Let’s face it. Buying gifts for ANYONE can be tough. Here are our top gift ideas for the yoga person YOU love.
If none of these resonate, keep reading for advice on how to shop for a yogi.
First of all if you get a gift for a yogi, we recommend being mindful. Take yoga into your purchasing. What the F do we even mean?
1. Think about where the product comes from, who makes it and what it’s made out of.
In general we recommend trying to buy from small or local businesses where your purchase actually means something. By shopping from the little guy, you will directly impacting someone who works hard and is grateful for your patronage.
The best gifts are ones that we didn’t even know we wanted but can REALLY use and enjoy right? Is there something that the yogi you love in your life really wants but would never buy for themselves? This could be something like a high-quality yoga mat, a gift of a mentorship or private lesson with a teacher they admire. Sometimes the gifts we love are the ones that aren’t necessities but accessories we cherish, like an essential oils set, sweet new crystal, or favourite yoga book.
Just like with yoga, gifting is all about intention. The thought truly does matter and in general most of us are just grateful to have been thought about! If you’re low on cash, a thoughtful card or homemade gift goes a LONG way. It’s easy to find a great cookie recipe on the internet that meets all of your yoga friend’s dietary stuff. Put your baked goods in brown paper boxes, tie with a bow and voilà!
Some other great gifts for the yogi in your life are:
1. Studio passes!
2. Restaurant gift certificates
3. Kitchen stuff- like almond or coconut oil, special spices or teas.
4. Plants! Who doesn’t love plants!
5. Meditation chimes, singing bowls or crystal bowls
