Yoga Teacher Training Costa Rica

Why is Costa Rica the bet place to do your yoga teacher training? Why does everyone want to do their 200hr YTT in Costa Rica?! Mostly because…

Why is Costa Rica the best place to do your yoga teacher training?

Why does everyone want to do their 200hr YTT in Costa Rica?

Is Costa Rica actually the best place to get yoga certified? So many people think it is! So many people START their yoga teacher training journey just by googling “200hr yoga teacher training Costa Rica” But why? Why do people think Costa Rica is the best and be all end all place for their yoga certification?

Mostly because… there are so many to choose from.

In the 90s and early 2000s, Costa Rica positioned itself as Eco-Friendly, safe, serene, beautiful, peaceful and above all, PURA VIDA- pure life. They identified areas of the country as blue zones, basically places where people are extra healthy and live longer due to the natural surroundings. The government sank millions into marketing to tourists with this narrative. There PR was so good that the country developed a reputation for being peaceful, inviting and perfect for yoga and yoga retreats!

Costa Rica made it super easy for foreigners to live and work there and open up businesses… so now, voila, so many yoga retreat centres and yoga teacher trainings are located in Costa Rica! It was easy to set up shop there!

But is Costa Rica REALLY the best place to get your 200hr yoga teacher training?  Maybe.

Here’s the truth:
The best place to do your yoga teacher training is not Costa Rica or Bali…

The best place to do your 200hr yoga teacher training is the place with the best program, the best teachers for you and the best place to safely immerse yourself in the experience.

Time and time again,
Yoga Academy has been voted one the best yoga teacher trainings in the world.

We do it right.

We have led more than 25 200hr yoga teacher trainings and over 40  yoga trainings overall.

We know what we’re doing…

We sometimes offer 200hr yoga teacher training in Costa Rica! BUT we also offer training elsewhere. Anywhere really that we find the best spot that is safe, oceanfront and perfect for learning.

Here’s what we offer at our next 200hr yoga teacher training just 3hrs from the Costa Rica airport:

✅ Oceanfront yoga Shala

✅ Modern, stylish comfortable rooms

✅ totally private retreat center for just us

✅ super nice local team who is incredibly accommodating and friendly

✅ world class surf breaks directly in front of the property

✅ chef cooking gourmet home style meals, delicious comfort food

✅ Oceanfront pool

✅ sunsets for days

✅ SUPER SAFE (we don’t even lock our doors)

✅ located in the cutest little dirt road town
.

So to sum it up,
sometimes we do yoga teacher training in Costa Rica… sometimes we don’t. EVERY TIME we do it in a gorgeous location with amazing views, experienced staff and great food.

About your instructors

Tina Bock has taught workshops, retreats, trainings, and private lessons all over the world, including the US, Canada, UAE, Lebanon, Kuwait, Germany, Italy, Greece, Nicaragua, Thailand, The Netherlands, and Bali.

Tina’s yoga journey began over a decade ago while being (happily) dragged by her father to local Jersey Shore classes. Yoga didn’t become a constant until after graduating from College. Tina quickly fell in love with Hot Vinyasa mostly in the style of Dharma Mittra. In 2012 at age 23, she took her first of now seven trips to India to study and discover real yoga.

She enrolled in a “Multi-Style” course at Trimurti Yoga and received her first 200-hour teacher certificate. In 2014 Tina and her husband relocated to Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, where she  found a real need to develop a self-practice because of her lack of teachers. Tina felt a burning desire to learn more about Mysore, Ashtanga, and the eight limbs of yoga, so she enrolled for one month studying with Saraswathi Jois at the K. Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute. She has since been back every year to study with Sharath Jois who has now become her teacher and guru.

Tina is currently practicing Intermediate series under KPJAYI and is an Authorized Level II teacher.

Founder of Yoga Academy International, Lauren is a globally celebrated yoga instructor. She has been teaching yoga for over a decade and comes from a variety of lineages and traditions.

Lauren’s has lead yoga retreats and workshops in over 2-dozen countries and continues to study with world-class  instructors whenever possible. Lauren has been featured in loads of publications including Women’s health Magazine, YogiTimes, Optymyz, Get Out There Magazine, as well as on countless podcasts and newspaper articles.

Lauren has solid roots in Iyengar based Hatha yoga with continued studies in Vinyasa flow, Anusara, Ashtanga, Restorative, Bhakti and Yin Yoga. She is inspired by teachers who tell stories. She has studied under Seane Corn, Chris Chavez, MC Yogi, Susan Cohen, Mercy Ananda, Nancy Goodfellow and many others. Lauren is passionate about sharing yoga from an authentic and soulful point of view. She believes that yoga practice can help uncover the veils that hide us from achieving our full potential.

Lauren has logged over 2000 formal training hours and over 25000 teaching hours. Lauren is E-RYT 500 & YACEP registered with Yoga Alliance.

NOT JUST AN AVERAGE YOGA TRAINING; IT WAS AN ENRICHING LIFE EXPERIENCE. I LEARNED SO MUCH ABOUT THE MANY ASPECTS OF YOGA AND MEDITATION. AS WELL AS MORE ABOUT MYSELF. I RECEIVED THE TOOLS TO LEAD A MORE EMPOWERED AND CONSCIOUS LIFE. THE GENUINE LOVE, GUIDANCE AND SUPPORT FROM THE SKILLED INSTRUCTORS AND MY FELLOW STUDENTS WAS APPARENT ON A DAILY BASIS AND SO APPRECIATED. I ENJOYED EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS COMPREHENSIVE AND WELL-PLANNED PROGRAM. GREAT VARIETY OF KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, AND LASTING FRIENDSHIPS. I’M FOREVER GRATEFUL.

I feel very lucky to have stumbled on to the gift of this practice, and I love that now I get to introduce it to others. I get to encourage the uncovering and discovering that inevitably comes along with it, not only during the asanas, but during those unexpected quiet moments of stillness…those golden moments where you find yourself going inward, and you find yourself. I’m SO excited to continue being a student of yoga…to continue being a teacher of yoga…to keep moving on this path

2. Compact Travel Yoga Mat

For the yogi always on the go, a foldable travel mat is a game-changer. It easily fits into a suitcase or backpack, making it perfect for yoga on the road. Hello- long layover airport yoga practices! Ya… we do that. Our favourite BY FAR is the Manduka eco-lite travel mat. Sticky, grippy, foldable. It’s $52 and WELL WORTH it.

If you’re Canadian and you prefer to shop a Canadian brand, BMat also makes a travel mat that is a good alternative. It’s basically just the rubber over-layer of their regular mat.

Yoga on the Beach: 4 Tips for a Rewarding Session

A beach environment is perfect for yoga, as you get a chance to commune with nature and enjoy its scenery. The calming energy of being near the ocean also creates optimal conditions for you to do some much-needed self-care and check in with yourself.

Yoga on the Beach: 4 Tips for a Rewarding Session

As a mindfulness practice, yoga is one of the most popular due to its many health benefits. It can improve your mental and physical well-being and help you better connect with the world around you. The effects of the latter can be further enhanced when yoga is done somewhere idyllic and calming, like on a beach.

A beach environment is perfect for yoga, as you get a chance to commune with nature and enjoy its scenery. The calming energy of being near the ocean also creates optimal conditions for you to do some much-needed self-care and check in with yourself. It’s a simple yet effective way to enhance your practice. If you want to make the most of doing yoga on the beach, here are five tips to achieve a rewarding session.

GO BEFORE NOON
Exercising outdoors is said to be beneficial for health because sunshine has been proven to boost mood. It triggers the production of serotonin, which is the hormone that makes you feel happy. However, staying under the sun for too long can be dangerous and lead to sunburn. As such, it’s best to find a time window when it’s safe to do yoga at the beach. Health experts suggest going between 8 am and 10 am for a healthy dose of sunlight. It won’t be that hot, and sun rays won’t be as intense and direct as they normally are around noon onwards.

USE SUN PROTECTION
As great as the sun is at providing Vitamin D, it can also cause damage to the body when preventative measures aren’t taken. Products like high-SPF sunscreen can lessen the chances of developing conditions like skin cancer as long as it’s used correctly. This means applying an even layer across all exposed skin at least 30 minutes prior to heading out, with reapplications every two hours. Similarly, sun damage can occur in the eyes when not properly protected. You can get beach sunglasses with advanced polarized lens technology to ensure the safety of your eyes. These specialized glasses will reduce the glare that you see reflected on the water from the sun. You can even opt for a custom fit so that your glasses stay on comfortably during a yoga session.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SAND
One of the most unique things about doing yoga at the beach is that you don’t have to prepare extra equipment to start. You can simply choose a spot and do yoga straight from the sand. In fact, bringing a yoga mat is even discouraged as the sand is just likely to stick to it and damage it. In some ways, the sand can actually support you better with yoga. It’s much softer and more forgiving should you lose your balance. This way, you can use your time at the beach to try new poses without worrying about getting hurt against a hard surface. That said, you should still exercise awareness so that you don’t push yourself too much.

BE IN SYNC WITH THE WAVES
Studies have proven that being at the beach naturally gives most people a calming and restorative effect. You can use this to your advantage when you do yoga by using the waves to keep count. The rhythmic sound of the ocean can be used to regulate your breathing, keep you focused, and eliminate any distractions around to keep your attention on the task at hand. It can also make you feel relaxed quickly, allowing you to be in a proper headspace ready for yoga.

The EASIEST way to meditate

Meditation is like giving your brain a break, a cleanse or a rest. Meditation effects our bodies in the exact opposite way that stress does. It helps our minds and bodies heal and repair as well as shields us from the damage of new stressors. With sustained practice, meditation can usher the practitioner into expanded realms of consciousness. There are no potential negative side effects. No equipment is needed.

the easiest way to meditate...

Meditation CAN be AS EASY AS 1…2…3…

How do I meditate? That’s a tough question. Let’s start by talking about what meditation actually is:

Meditation is a mindfulness practice that has been around for millennia. Mindfulness means becoming more fully aware of the present moment without attachment or expectation.

Meditation is the spirit of being “in the now”. There is no religious or spiritual component to mindfulness or meditation. ANYONE with any belief system or from any religious background can enjoy the benefits of meditation.

Like any skill, Meditation takes time and sustained practice to master.

The benefits of meditation have been scientifically proven. It’s effects are far reaching and cumulative over time. The longer you maintain a committed meditation practice, the more benefits you will realize.

IMMEDIATE BENEFITS OF MEDITATION:

  • Slower heart rate
  • Release of physical tension
  • A sense of having a break (from stress) for a few moments
  • Calmer mood and mindset

LONGTERM BENEFITS OF DAILY MEDITATION:

  • Reduced cortisol levels and less reactivity toward stress
  • Greater relief from physical, stress-related pain (like headaches)
  • Improved creativity
  • Lower blood pressure
  • Greater overall clarity
  • Better decision making
  • Greater resilience to stress
  • Improved memory, learning ability, intuition
  • Increased ability to focus and concentrate
  • Dramatic increases in personal self-awareness
  • Greater emotional and mental stability
  • Creation of new neural pathways between the left and right hemispheres

But how do i meditate?

There are many different types of meditation. Different styles will resonate with different people. All meditation involves being fully present and quieting the mind away from other distractions. Another important part of meditation is posture. It is crucial to be upright (laying down is okay too in some instances) with the spine erect. This allows for the energy to flow freely up and down our central energetic axis from root to crown and back again.

FINDING A COMFORTABLE SEAT: If a practitioner is going to engage in a seated meditation, the most important aspect is to be comfortable in that seated position. To align oneself properly in meditation, insure that: 1. The 2 sitting bones are rooted firmly into the ground (or chair) 2. The knees are below the hips (sometimes props are needed to aid with this) 3. The spine is upright and stacked (ears over shoulders, shoulders over hips)

STEADY BREATH: Finding a calm and steady stream of breath is another important part of meditation. Start by slowing down and deepening the breath. Then let the inhales and exhales become the same length. Once that happens, allow yourself to breathe normally without effort or thought.

RELEASING THE MIND: Of course distraction happens. This is normal! Meditation does not mean thoughts do not happen. It also doesn’t mean we do not notice sounds or bugs or things around us. Meditation is a practice of non-attachment and letting go. If thoughts come up, which they will, notice them, move them out of your awareness and then return to your meditation gently, gracefully, without judgement. If you find yourself distracted by something around you, notice it and gently return back to your meditation.

Remember: Just like physical postures, meditation takes practice. Just like Asana, meditation is often challenging the first few times. It reveals sides of ourselves that may be dark or scary. Just like in asana practice, we may notice areas of the body where we are tight, strained or week, in meditation we start to notice thought patterns or belief systems that we want to soften.

Morning checklist for a more mindful life

Every single morning when you wake up, you have the opportunity for a fresh start. Each and every morning you can decide if you will make a change or not. Each and every day you get to side who you are going to wake up and be that day.

Daily morning checklist for
more mindful living

Includes a downloadable checklist!

New Year… new week…. new month…  Often we feel pressured to start each new cycle with something new! We seek a goal, a challenge or something to inspire us. What we sometimes forget is that each new year, new month, new week, starts with a NEW DAY.

Each and every day you get a chance to decide who you are going to wake up and be.

Every single morning when you wake up, you have the opportunity for a fresh start. Each and every morning you can decide if you will make a change or not. Each and every day you get to side who you are going to wake up and be that day.

Who will you choose to be tomorrow morning?

studies have proven time and time again that a healthy, positive and uplifting morning routine leads to a more fulfilling and successful day.

Below we’ve created a simple. actionable and easy to manage morning routine checklist. Try it for a week and see if you like it! Click the image to download this as a PDF or simply keep it on your phone or tablet and check it off! Be sure to let us know how it goes!

In addition to having a mindfulness checklist, we also recommend the following:

1.Wake up at the same time every day.

This helps your body establish a rhythm, making it easier to get up in the morning.

2. Have a set of easy breakfast options so you're not wondering what to eat.

We eat the same thing every morning, fruit, with protein (eggs or nut butters) and a carb. Except Tuesdays when we have pancakes! Having a couple of simple options for breakfast that you know, love and depend on takes out the struggle of having to make mundane decisions first thing in the morning.

3. Create a daily to do list

Actually, we feel it best to do this the night before so you do not wake up in the morning stressed about what you “think” you need to accomplish that day or try to remember all the errands you need to run that morning. Creating a to do list for the next morning the night before also allows you to sleep better, knowing that your next day is set out. Prioritize the list in a higherarchy to help you organize your day!

Download the checklist and see how you do for a week! Do you want to incorporate it in to your month? Year? How do you feel when you have a guideline for your day? Let us know!

Ashtanga for Beginners

Ashtanga yoga is primarily a self-practice. That’s what is cool about it! You just try and keep trying and see how you progress. When you can, you seek out a qualified teacher. So here’s our favourite Ashtangi, Tina Bock, offering you an express primary series for beginners. This is a perfect place to start your Ashtanga Yoga practice!

Ashtanga for beginners

You could also call it Ashtanga express

What is Ashtanga Yoga? It’s a pretty disciplined and classical approach to yoga. It came to us through Pattabhi Jois via his teacher, Krishnamacharya. Ashtanga Yoga is progressive and linear. You start where you are. You start where you can and you practice and repeat 6-days per week and track your own progression.

If this is too much to start, feel free instead to begin JUST with sun salutations. Maybe you’ll do 1 round of sun salutations, maybe 2 or 3. You just do what you can and then come back again the next day and try again. Ashtanga Yoga may seem intimidating for beginners but it is actually a very accessible yoga practice since it’s progressive and linear. Ashtanga Yoga really takes a “do what you can” kind of attitude to your yoga practice.

How to shop for a yoga person?

First of all if you get a gift for a yogi, we recommend being mindful. Take yoga into your purchasing. What the F do we even mean?

1. Think about where the product comes from, who makes it and what it’s made out of.

In general we recommend trying to buy from small or local businesses where your purchase actually means something. By shopping from the little guy, you will directly impacting someone who works hard and is grateful for your patronage.

The best gifts are ones that we didn’t even know we wanted but can REALLY use and enjoy right? Is there something that the yogi you love in your life really wants but would never buy for themselves? This could be something like a high-quality yoga mat, a gift of a mentorship or private lesson with a teacher they admire.  Sometimes the gifts we love are the ones that aren’t necessities but accessories we cherish, like an essential oils set, sweet new crystal, or favourite yoga book.

What is something that a yoga person would really want but wouldn't necessarily buy for themselves?

Just like with yoga, gifting is all about intention. The thought truly does matter and in general most of us are just grateful to have been thought about! If you’re low on cash, a thoughtful card or homemade gift goes a LONG way. It’s easy to find a great cookie recipe on the internet that meets all of your yoga friend’s dietary stuff. Put your baked goods in brown paper boxes, tie with a bow and voilà!

Some other great gifts for the yogi in your life are:

1. Studio passes!

2. Restaurant gift certificates

3. Kitchen stuff- like almond or coconut oil, special spices or teas.

4. Plants! Who doesn’t love plants!

5. Meditation chimes, singing bowls or crystal bowls

We have at least 4 teachers (usually 6-8) at EVERY 200hr yoga teacher training. We want you to get a variety of perspectives, a diverse education and a wide range of class styles.

GORGEOUS locations

At all of our teacher trainings you will be surrounded by nature and can watch sunset every day (sunset is very important to us). You will get to explore your practice in mind, body and spirit while also being immersed in the beauty of the natural world.

Professional & high standard of Education

While demanding, our program truly prepares our students for professional careers in yoga. Our students have a very high success rate when they leave us. Many have gone on to open their own studios, lead international yoga retreats, teach at conferences and festivals, open successful coaching businesses and more.

High Return rate

70% of our graduates come back for more trainings! We must be doing something right… Not only do our students come back for more trainings with us, they often come back and visit during our 200hr programs just to hang out at Yoga Academy again, take our morning flows and be part of our community.
