The Clinical Benefits of Yoga

Yoga has been recognized for centuries as a powerful holistic practice. However, it’s only in fairly recent times that modern-day science has proven the benefits yogis have come to enjoy for generations. In fact, over the last decade alone, dozens of clinical trials have been conducted in regard to yoga. Just last 2019, for instance, 22 randomized clinical trials into yoga’s benefits were conducted. These included trials that tested yoga’s correlation with cognition, mental health, and more. All of these studies, though, share the common result that yoga’s advantages aren’t just for the spirit—but also for the body.

How Are Yoga’s Benefits Clinically Verified?

But just how is a practice like yoga clinically verified for benefits? Through painstaking trials and studies conducted by clinical researchers in partnership with experienced yogis. Among the most critical careers in healthcare, clinical researchers are a cut above your average analyst. This is because they’re specially trained in monitoring data, ensuring protocols, implementing ethical guidelines, and conducting tests in regard to medical and science-related fields. This ensures that all control tests and results are especially relevant and accurate in relation to a direct hypothesis. In these cases, the research, analysis, and problem-solving skills of clinical researchers allow them to verify or debunk claims regarding yoga’s benefits. It is through these researchers and their trials that we can confidently share some of yoga’s most relevant clinically-verified advantages.

Clinically Proven Yoga Benefits:
1) Improves Aging

Yoga’s ability to improve overall well-being is not just true for younger practitioners, but also for older adults. As a matter of fact, an international study with participants aged 61 to 83 years old has accurately proven this. According to this trial, which was led by researchers from the UK, yoga’s strength and balance enhancing abilities can drastically improve senior mobility. According to the trials’ results, yoga was able to offset age-related muscle loss and heighten bone density. Aside from this, the breathing practices and postures upheld in yoga were shown to improve cardiovascular function and sleep hygiene. Both of which are known to decline with age. As such, it’s safe to say that older adults wary of practicing yoga have much more to gain should they try.

2) Eases Anxiety

Since 2017, studies on the mental health effects of yoga have highlighted how the practice specifically eases depression and anxiety. One notable clinical trial on anxiety even reveals that Kundalini yoga is efficacious in the treatment of generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Considered one of the most impactful yet undertreated mental health conditions, GAD affects nearly 4 million adults annually. For most people, GAD is a lifelong condition that usually starts in childhood or early adolescence. If left untreated, GAD can create an overwhelming sense of dread that can make it hard to complete even simple tasks. Thankfully, yoga has been an effective substitute for GAD treatment among patients uncomfortable or unable to access cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). This is because of the mindfulness and controlled breathing that yoga espouses. Over time, these have been proven to help calm and center a person. Through this, mental health crises can be averted and anxiety can be kept under control.

3) Encourages Immunity

No other disease has swept the world like COVID-19. A highly-contagious virus, COVID-19 is best avoided and survived through good hygiene, vaccines, and immunity. However, among those three factors, arguably the most difficult to maintain is a good immune system. Interestingly, though, yoga has been celebrated for its immunity-boosting benefits, especially in light of the pandemic. Given that yoga is a practice that uplifts the body, mind, and spirit, it is believed to create a well-rounded approach that helps hasten healing. New pandemic-related evidence even suggests that yoga breathing practices can help patients recover from the virus. Simple video tutorials given to patients in Italy were even deemed essential in retraining the pulmonary system. As such, this only solidifies the role and importance that yoga has in the new normal.

In conclusion, yoga is a holistic endeavor that’s been proven effective on multiple fronts. Designed with various forms and styles for every need and circumstance, yoga is a worthwhile addition to invest in. If you want to start practicing yoga today, why not try this super gentle yoga stretch to start? If you’re looking for something more challenging or specific, though, please feel free to reach out and be a member with us today.

What are the Chakras? An introduction to the chakra system

We have seven major chakras in our bodies. These are energetic points in our bodies that either draw in or expel energy. When we are feeling whole, healthy, stable we can say that our chakras are spinning in a balanced way. when we feel off in some ways, we might say that one of our chakras is imbalanced.

What are the chakras?

Introduction to the chakra system

Okay so what are the chakras? Why should you give a sh*t about your chakras? What do they even mean…?

The chakras are a kind of energetic anatomy in the body. Think of a chakra like a wheel of energy.

We have seven major chakras in our bodies. These are energetic points in our bodies that either draw in or expel energy. When we are feeling whole, healthy, stable we can say that our chakras are spinning in a balanced way. when we feel off in some ways, we might say that one of our chakras is imbalanced.

Sometimes emotional or physical ailments can effect the way our chakras turn, either causing them to spin too slowly (under-active) or too quickly (overactive).

Chakra
in
sanskrit
means
wheel

The 7 major chakras
align themselves
along the
Shushumna Nadi.

The Shushumna Nadi is the central Energetic super highway of our bodies. It’s located roughly in the same spot as your spinal chord. Just like your spinal chord delivers physiological information to your body about how to move or how you’re feeling, the shushumna Nadi delivers energetic information throughout your body, including to and from your chakras. This might happen in the way of feelings, emotions, belief systems of patterns of behaviours.

Relating to the physical body, the chakras are also where there are major collections of nerve ganglia. So when we talk about our chakras we are also referring to specific areas of our bodies and places where we actually DO receive and send out A LOT of information to our brains about how we are doing.

Chakra imbalances can arise or resurface at various point in our lives. Sometimes a physical injury can knock a chakra out of balance, (because of all the nerve endings there), sometimes an emotional injury can. Sometimes we carry things from long ago as trauma or behaviour patterns. They can be triggered by a seemingly unrelated event and can also cause a chakra or chakras to become imbalanced. Sometimes chakra imbalances are inherited from things we’ve learned from friends, family, loved ones or from belief systems or behaviours that we’ve reinforced within ourselves for years.

Why should you give a sh*t about your chakras?

Okay so why should you give a sh*t about your chakras? Well, if your curious about yourself and your personal growth, understanding the chakras can give you some insight in to YOU! The chakras can help us understand the mind-body connection a little better. Think of the chakra system as just another lens of looking at the way you are.

The chakra system is simply a yogic tool that we can use to better understand our physical and emotional bodies. Learning about the chakras can provide insight on what makes us tick and why we act and react in the ways that we do. With knowledge and awareness comes the ability to grow and make change. The better we get to know ourselves, the more able we are to find our individual happiness and live our own best life.

Each chakra has it’s own theme. Each chakra has it’s own associated patterns, actions, beliefs, ways of being, injuries, ailments and more… without getting too deep into it here, we’ll say this: Each chakra helps you accept and understand a unique part of YOU that makes up the wholeness of your being.

Below we’ve created some simple affirmations for each chakra. Screenshot it and keep it on your phone if you like, or just take the one that you need and repeat it to yourself as you meditate in the morning or walk the dog or before you go to sleep each night.

Self-care check in

One of the 8 limbs of yoga is called pratyahara which means withdrawal of the senses. The primary goal of pratyahara is to get to know our internal world even better.

Sometimes we forget to check in. Sometimes we forget what selfcare even looks like…

So with that in mind, here’s a quick self-care check-in you can do with yourself.

Self-Care
check in

Sometimes we move away from ourselves. Sometimes it happens so gradually that suddenly we stop and realize we don’t recognize ourselves anymore.

Yoga teacher Jason Crandel says, “Yoga is the perfect opportunity to get curious about who you are.” It’s true. In fact a lot of the yoga practice places an emphasis on self study and withdrawl in to our own being. One of the 5 Niyamas or disciplines of yoga is Swadyaya. This is the Sanskrit word for self-study or self-observation.

We recommend that you screen shot the list below and check off which ways you practice self-care each day.

Check-in daily with yourself and maybe with the list too and see if you can do at least 3-things to check in with yourself and practice some self-care each day.

Yoga Basics: Chaturanga Dandasana

In Sanskrit this pose translates to Four Limb Stick Pose. Chatura is the number 4. Anga is a limb, like the branch of a tree, Danda is a stick or a staff and Asana means posture.

This pose is SO often misaligned in vinyasa classes but no one ever corrects their students!

Why is it important to know how to do chaturanga dandasana? Because if you frequently misalign this pose you can create long lasting shoulder injuries. Here’s Lauren Rudick takes you through how to do this pose safely.
